Poetry of resistance : A Bridge between the Past and Present of Spanish Youth

In the historical context of Spain, resistance poetry emerges as a living testimony to the struggle for freedom and justice. Within the framework of the Poetry of Resistance project, the aim is to promote European Remembrance and the active participation of today’s youth by studying and reflecting on the role played by resistance movements in combating 20th-century dictatorships.

In Spain, as in all of Europe, there is evidence of a disconnection of young people from traditional political processes (Youth Participation Strategy, SALTO 2020). However, preserving the memory of resistance movements may be an effective way to engage young people in civic and political life, reversing the described trends and creating opportunities for new democratic achievements based on European common history.

The challenge facing Spanish youth in the 21st century is complex. On one hand, they are confronted with an increasingly globalized and digitalized world, offering unprecedented opportunities for connection and cultural exchange. On the other hand, they face the threat of extremist and xenophobic movements, distorting historical facts and promoting intolerance and hatred towards minorities.

It is in this context that resistance poetry takes on new relevance. By studying and reflecting on the role played by resistance movements in the past, young people can find inspiration and guidance to confront the challenges of the present. Resistance poetry offers them a bridge between the past and present, between the struggle for freedom of their ancestors and the fight for a fairer and more equitable future.

Today’s Spanish youth have the opportunity to follow the example of those who came before them, to rise against injustice and oppression, to speak out for those who cannot do so themselves. Resistance poetry offers them a platform to express themselves and connect with others who share their values and dreams of a better world.

It is crucial that Spanish youth actively engage in preserving historical memory and in the fight for justice and human rights. By doing so, they can contribute to building a more democratic and inclusive future for all. Resistance poetry provides them with the tools and inspiration to make this a reality.

In a world where memory is fragile and history tends to be distorted or ignored, resistance poetry reminds us that the past should never be forgotten.
